It all sounded rather impressive – a prime minister getting on her soapbox, taking her message to the people, attempting to puncture the assumptions of the Westminster bubble. England outside London, where the bulk of the Brexit votes were cast in 2016, has not been on her itinerary. Next week she will be tied down in the five-day Commons debate on the Brexit deal. Before she left for the G20, Mrs May spent nearly two hours answering questions at Westminster from the liaison committee of Commons committee chairs. Now she has emerged with a ragbag deal that most MPs still do not support.
